Frank Skinner Hints At New World Cup Song
Frank Skinner, who helped create the successful football anthem Three Lions, says he is thinking of recording a new song for this summer’s World Cup.
Skinner said he would like to get the same team of him, David Baddiel and the Lightning Seeds back together for a new tune.
He said: “I was thinking I might write a completely new one - why not? …
“, adding he would like to “stick with the old team”.
He discounted re-releasing Three Lions, which was a Number One in 1996 and 1998, saying: “I don’t think we can get any more blood out of that stone.”
Skinner added of the 90s chart-topper: “We haven’t got complete control, the record company could re-release it if they’d like to.”
The star was speaking at Loaded magazine’s seventh annual comedy awards, otherwise known as the Laftas, where he won the comedy legend title.
After 23 years in the business, Skinner has seen comedians come and go, but still has plenty of time for fellow award-winner Michael McIntyre.
He said: “I think he’s incredibly funny and you do hear some comedians say they don’t like him. But he’s made one big mistake, he’s got way too successful, comedians don’t like that.”
McIntyre scooped Best Stand-Up Comedian of the year, beating four-time winner Jimmy Carr.
But Carr did not walk away empty-handed, as his programme Eight Out of 10 Cats won Funniest Comedy Panel Show.
Carr believes in pushing the limits of comedy.
Last year, he sparked controversy with a joke about injured soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.
Before the ceremony, he said: “As long as it’s funny I think you can get away with most things.
“Comedians can get a little bit arrogant and think we have the right to freedom of speech and we can say anything, but also people have the right to feel offended.”
Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer made an appearance to pick up their award for Funniest Double Act.
The two have been together for 25 years and say they want to go back to their roots with a sketch show.
Mortimer said: “It’s where we think we’re funniest, I don’t know if the public do, but it’s where we think we’re at our funniest.
“A lot of the sketch shows on TV at the moment have become incredibly similar.
“They use the same writers, the same types of sketches, and I think we bring something different.”
TV presenter and comedian Justin Lee Collins won the Funniest Man award, despite saying he stopped being funny a few years ago.
Collins said: “I think the moment you stop trying to be funny, the moment you stop trying to tell people jokes… is I think possibly when you maybe become funny.”
Currently, he is working with Ronan Keating on Ireland’s entry for the Eurovision Song Contest.
The Funniest Woman of the year went to Katy Brand.
After lots of television work, she is looking forward to getting back on the touring circuit.
She said: “You can be a bit of a hand grenade when you’re live on stage and anything can happen. I just want to remember that.”
Jonathan Ross’ plans to jump ship from the BBC did not hurt his standing with comedy fans - he won Funniest TV Personality.
“Many thanks to Loaded magazine for the Lafta Award,” he said on Twitter.
“If I’d known I was nominated I’d have been there!”
Readers of Loaded magazine voted for the winners.
Other recipients included The Inbetweeners for Funniest Show on TV, Adam Buxton and Joe Cornish for Funniest Podcast and Russell Howard for Funniest DVD.

Surely the most shocking part of this article is the fact that Vic & Bob won the Funniest Double Act award ?. My choice would have been syphilis and gonorrhea. Not that amusing, but certainly a damn site funnier than the actual winners.
Three Lions is a legendary football song! Every football fan I know loves it and hwe should re release it for the world cup - guaranteed number 1!
Well that’ll be a treat!!?! Can someone please tell this man that he CANNOT sing to save his life. God knows we’ve got enough tosh in the charts without more hiddeous football anthems being released (not sure if you’ve noticed, but we never win anyway!).
ZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz!
